Furniture space planning is one of the most critical—and often overlooked—parts of interior design. While many designers focus on aesthetics, few seem to truly master the balance between style and function. At Goosen Design, we believe that effective space planning is essential to creating a comfortable and practical space that feels right for the people using it.
A client once came to us with a staff kitchen plan from another designer, showing two tables and 16 chairs. When we reviewed the furniture sizes, we found that they were far from realistic. The chairs were scaled too small and the size of the tables would not have accommodated regular sized chairs of that quantity. The design was never going to work and the client would have wasted a lot of money on furniture that had nowhere to go. We reworked the plan, using accurate furniture dimensions, and found that only one table and 8 chairs fit comfortably, improving both the flow and usability of the space.
At Goosen Design, we know what is a common furniture scale and the amount of space required around the furniture for movement and flow, ensuring our plans work not just visually, but practically. We show clients precisely how each piece will fit and function, avoiding the common pitfalls of overcrowding or misjudged measurements.
If you’re questioning the functionality of your floor plans, don’t hesitate to get a second opinion. Proper space planning is about more than aesthetics—it’s about making sure your home or office actually works for you.
